Our Story

Why We Do What We Do

Ora's Place name was thought in memory of my mother Ora Lee Lewis-Burke.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Ora fought for housing, school integration, busing, civil rights, and for aid for families with children.  Although Ora was behind the scenes, and not well known, she was in the line of fire for what was morally, and basic human rights! As a child, attending school in the late 60s, I can remember standing with my mother, siblings, and others waiting for the school buses to come to get us to take us to an all-white school. When we arrived, it was not always pleasant. There would be police, dogs, protestors, etc. It was a frightening experience, but thank God for the teachers, and the students who were very comforting and polite. Ora, a pioneer in her own rights, would feed, clothe, and give her last dollar to people she did not know. She was a gentle soul, who believed that all people were good! They just need someone to listen, encourage, and believe in them. She was not only my hero but theirs as well. She will surely be missed!

The Board

The Board is made up of individuals who have an education, and background working with a diverse population of homeless families, individuals, substance abuse, and other supportive services in the Human Service field. The Board’s vision and belief are that “No family should have to choose to leave employment in order to become eligible for EA to be placed in temporary shelter or transitional setting.”

The need for more shelters and transitional housing for families is even greater than before! Due to the economy, increase of rents, mortgages, constant lay-offs, and a decrease in subsidies for housing. Our goal for Ora's Place, Inc. is to see that these families are placed in safe, secured transitional housing, sheltered, and to continue to be employed to sustain self-sufficiency, and independence, and able to move into permanent housing. We The Board at Ora's Place, Inc. ask for your support.
